Introduction to Fertigation

Regardless of whether your landscape consists of mostly grass or a variety of plants and shrubs, you have probably needed to fertilize at one point or another. Lawn and plants need a boost every now and then to help them get through seasons or to make them bloom better.

Most people use either a slow-release or a water-soluble fertilizer to feed their plants and lawn. However, there is another fertilization method called fertigation.

What is Fertigation?

Fertigation is a simple process that combines fertilization and irrigation. Fertilizers are added directly into the irrigation system. This process has been widely used in the past by commercial growers and the farming industry. Now the systems are available on a smaller scale and can be used in residential applications. Fertigation systems reduce soil erosion, water consumption, and the amount of fertilizer needed.

Adding a Fertigation System

If you are thinking of adding a fertigation system, there are some things you need to consider. First, make sure it is properly installed. Fertigation requires a suitable irrigation system and a proper backflow preventer. A suitable system can be the right irrigation valve with drip or an emitter system on a timer.

After the right system is in place, you need to decide what fertilizer to use and how often. If you have a garden with a wide variety of annuals or perennials, a fertigation system may not work for you. However, if you have a line of privacy hedges or plants that require similar feeds, then this can be a good choice.
